Where to stay in Crete

Crete is roughly 260 kilometres end to end. That single fact should shape the whole trip: you cannot see the island from one base, and the most common mistake is trying. Pick a region, or split your stay between two.

A practical split that works for a week: three or four nights in Chania for the west, then three in Rethymno or Heraklion for the centre. Two bases, one drive between them, and you actually see the island.

The beaches, and how far they really are

Crete has the most famous beaches in Greece and the longest drives to reach them. The distances below are the part most guides leave out.

Knossos, the Minoans and what to see

The gorges

Getting there and how long to stay

Best months: May, June, September and October. Crete has the longest season in Greece and the south coast is swimmable well beyond the point where the Cyclades have shut.
Do not base once: the single most useful piece of advice about Crete. Two bases for a week, three for ten days.
What to try: dakos, the barley rusk with tomato and mizithra; the sheep's cheeses; raki, which arrives free at the end of a meal and is not optional.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in Crete?
It depends which end you want. Chania for the west and the prettiest town, Rethymno for a cheaper Venetian old town with a beach attached, Heraklion for Knossos and the museum, Agios Nikolaos or Elounda for the calmer east, the south coast for wilder and warmer. For a week, use two bases rather than one.
Can you see Crete from one base?
Not really. The island is around 260 kilometres end to end and the two main airports are two and a half hours apart. Four days covers one region. For a week, split between the west and the centre. Trying to do it all from one hotel means spending the holiday in the car.
Which are the best beaches in Crete?
Elafonisi for the pink sand, Balos for the lagoon, Falassarna for the sunset, Preveli for the palm river, Vai for the palm forest in the east and Matala for the caves. The catch is distance: Elafonisi is about two hours each way from Chania, and Balos needs either a boat or a rough track that many rental contracts exclude.
Is Knossos worth visiting?
Yes, but go knowing what it is. Much of what stands was reconstructed in concrete by Arthur Evans in the early twentieth century and remains archaeologically contested. The actual finds are in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which many visitors rate higher than the site.
How hard is the Samaria Gorge?
Sixteen kilometres, almost all downhill, so it is your knees rather than your lungs that suffer. It takes most of a day, runs roughly May to October, and is one-way: you finish at Agia Roumeli on the south coast and return by boat and then bus. Imbros gorge at eight kilometres is the gentler alternative.
When is the best time to visit Crete?
May, June, September and October. Crete has the longest season in Greece, and the south coast stays swimmable well after the Cyclades have wound down. July and August are hot inland and busy on the north coast.
