Where to stay in Mykonos

On Mykonos the base decides the holiday more than on any other Greek island, because the town, the party beaches and the quiet north are three different places that happen to share a rock.

The beaches

Almost every famous Mykonos beach is on the south coast, sheltered from the meltemi and organised to within an inch of its life. The north is the opposite of that.

Sea taxis run along the south coast from Platis Gialos and Ornos, hopping between beaches. In high season that is often faster and less stressful than driving and hunting for a parking space.

Delos, and why it is the real reason to come

Half an hour by boat from the old port sits one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean, and a surprising number of visitors never go.

The town, and what else there is

Getting there and how long to stay

Best months: June and September. Everything is open, the sea is warm, and prices are noticeably below August.
On the cost: Mykonos is the most expensive Greek island and it is not close. A sunbed on Psarou can cost more than a night's room on Naxos. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it should not be a surprise.
If you want quiet: it exists here — Agios Sostis, Fokos, Ano Mera and the north generally. Most visitors never see that side of the island.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in Mykonos?
Mykonos Town if you want to walk everywhere and do not mind noise and price. Ornos for a calm sandy bay ten minutes away, which is the usual family answer. Platis Gialos for organised beach plus sea taxis. Paradise or Super Paradise only if the clubs are the point. Ano Mera inland is by far the cheapest, and you will need a car.
Is Mykonos really that expensive?
Yes. It is the most expensive Greek island by a clear margin, and a sunbed on Psarou can cost more than a night's accommodation on Naxos. June and September are noticeably cheaper than August, and Ano Mera and the north coast are a different price level entirely.
Is Delos worth visiting from Mykonos?
It is the most important thing on the island and many visitors skip it. Boats leave the old port on a fixed timetable, the crossing is about thirty minutes and you usually get around three hours there. Go early in your stay, because strong meltemi cancels the crossing.
Which are the best beaches in Mykonos?
Psarou for glamour, Paradise and Super Paradise for clubs, Platis Gialos and Ornos for organised family beaches, Elia for the longest stretch of sand, and Agios Sostis or Fokos if you want no facilities and no music at all.
How many days do you need in Mykonos?
Three days covers the town, Delos and a couple of beaches. Five lets you add the north coast and Ano Mera. Longer only really makes sense if you came for the beach clubs.
Can you do Mykonos without the party scene?
Yes, though you have to choose for it. Base yourself in Ornos, Agios Ioannis or Ano Mera, use the north coast beaches like Agios Sostis and Fokos, and treat the town as an evening rather than a night. Delos and the inland village are a completely different island from Paradise beach.
