Where to stay in Naxos

Naxos is big enough that the base you pick shapes the whole trip. Five areas cover almost everyone.

The beaches, south from town

Naxos keeps its famous beaches on the west coast, in a row, so you can work your way down.

The east coast — Moutsouna, Psili Ammos, Panermos — is a different island: remote, barely developed, no facilities. Take water and a full tank.

Getting to Naxos

How many days do you need

Best months: June and September. Warm sea, everything open, and the crowds of August have not arrived or have left.
About the wind: the meltemi blows hardest in July and August and hits this west coast directly. Excellent for kitesurfing, less so if you wanted a flat sea and an umbrella.
What to eat: graviera from Naxos, which carries a protected designation, the sharper arseniko cheese, the island's potatoes, and kitron, a citrus-leaf liqueur still distilled in Halki.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in Naxos?
Naxos Town if it is your first visit or you have no car: you can walk to the port, the tavernas and a beach. Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna if you want the beach on your doorstep. Plaka for something quieter, and the mountain villages if you are back for a second time.
What are the best beaches in Naxos?
They run in a line down the west coast. Agios Prokopios is the postcard one, Agia Anna the most sheltered, Plaka the longest at four kilometres, and Alyko the strangest, with a cedar forest behind the sand. Agios Georgios in town is the easiest with small children.
How do I get to Naxos from Athens?
Ferry from Piraeus takes three and a half to four hours on a fast boat and five to six on a conventional one, which is cheaper and steadier in wind. Rafina is the alternative port and sits closer to the airport. There are also domestic flights of about forty-five minutes, on small aircraft that sell out early.
How many days do you need in Naxos?
Three days covers the town and two beaches. Five lets you add the mountain villages and Mount Zas. A week gives you the Small Cyclades and the east coast as well.
Is Naxos expensive?
It is mid-range and noticeably cheaper than Santorini or Mykonos for the same standard of room and meal. The mountain villages are cheaper again.
Do you need a car in Naxos?
Not if you stay in Naxos Town or on the Agios Prokopios strip, which the bus serves well. You do need one for Plaka onwards, the mountain villages and the whole east coast.
